How Karnak Wellness Institute began

Saturday, December 26, 2009, Malcolm X College in conjunction with the Bolozi Wazee (Council of Elders)/ Shule Ya Watoto successfully conducted its 15th Annual Kwanzaa Observance program. The theme was “Kwanzaa 2009: Honoring our Elders for Preserving our Cultural Heritage” December 26, 2009 - January 1, 2010.

During the opening day ceremony, which is traditionally officiated by elder Boba Hanibal AfriK, the men were chastised, then challenged to stop ignoring the plight of younger black men in America. A date was set for the first of many training sessions for men to mentor at least one youth in their life.

Ghingo Brooks (Obawole Brooks )The opening ceremony concluded with the appointment of President Ghingo W. Brooks as Village Chief. President Brooks was renamed Obawole Brooks by the Bolozi Wazee. He would serve as a respected advisor, teacher and regal role model. He announced his first assignments by charging attendees to demonstrate involvement to the betterment of their communities and report their results next year; requested all to check for notices regarding the Karnack Institute (a program geared to educate, empower, and enlighten the public through workshops and forums); and plan to join a men’s mentoring session beginning January 2009.

The event was supported by contributors and volunteers who helped entertain and unite the attending community free of charge. The cultural ceremony was enjoyed by more than 4,000 visitors.

These two events mark historic opportunities for President Ghingo Brooks to further his work empowering the community, and now the world through education and mentorship.
